About Save the People and Environment Foundation (SPEF)
Save the People and Environment Foundation (SPEF) is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization (NGO) committed to improving the lives and livelihood of local communities while protecting biodiversity and improving knowledge towards the mitigation of climate change. SPEF was created in June 2018 and registered officially by Cameroon’s Ministry of Territorial Administration on the 12th of June 2020 with Registration Number 678/G37/ C84/ VOL1/SASC in conformity with law 90/053 of 19/12/1990 of the Republic of Cameroon.
Why we exist.
SPEF was created to improve knowledge of the Man-Environment Relationship with biodiversity conservation, human rehabilitation for education for sustainable development, research, livelihood training, and capacity building at the heart of the initiators. SPEF team was motivated by the increasing water crisis in rural areas, declining health conditions, environmental degradation, unsustainable exploitation of biodiversity and habitat fragmentation from agriculture expansion, and the lack of knowledge on bush fire control, especially around protected areas in Cameroon
Our brief history
Save the People and Environment Foundation (SPEF) started its work in the year 2000 on humanitarian action under Zeh’s Initiative to Foster Academic Excellence in Fungom Subdivision, Menchum Division. It was focused mainly on humanitarian actions which were shaped towards the education of the underprivileged and orphans in the rural areas of Menchum Division, North West Region of Cameroon. Between 2000 and 2016 over 300 underprivileged secondary school students were sponsored in Fungom Subdivision under the initiative.
The Activities slowed down in the wake of the Anglophone crisis in Cameroon since 2016. In 2018, with the increasing research conducted in rural areas, the initiative realized that not only our education system needed attention but also the environment and man in the rural landscape. It is for this reason that the Initiative formerly focused on education and humanitarian works were baptized as “Save the People and Environment Foundation” and registered in June 2020 by the Cameroon Ministry of Territorial Administration. SPEF is now focused on Saving man and the environment where man lives to make mother earth a better place for mankind. SPEF has been focused in the peripheral communities around the Kimbi-Fungom National Park and is gradually expanding to other areas in Cameroon, especially in the South West Region and the East Region.
